HP, Orange Gum and Newpalm Launch China' s First SMS Interactive Entertainment Services
Available to China Mobile subscribers, the SMS interactive services are a result of collaboration within HP' s Mobile e-Services Bazaar
7.19 2001
Asia Pacific, SINGAPORE, July 19, 2001 -- Hewlett Packard Company (NYSE:HWP), Orange Gum and Newpalm (China) Information Technology Co., Ltd. today jointly announce the launch of Asia' s first SMS interactive entertainment services in China. Brand named eZhangWanBa (ePalm Game King), these services are part of a package of new mobile solutions that are being offered through China Mobile, Mainland China' s largest mobile carrier. Available immediately to the more than 7.5 million mobile subscribers in Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin, these services are supported and promoted under a collaborative framework between HP and China Mobile.
eZhangWanBa is the suite of interactive SMS services which includes new gaming and entertainment services that will be released progressively in the future. The initial services under eZhangWanBa include popular Chinese language game titles such as Great Pals, Mindmapper, Carter, Friendship Club, Happy Bomb, Zoojampa and Water Boy .
The interactive SMS entertainment services have been jointly developed by HP' s Mobile e-Services Bazaar members, Orange Gum and Newpalm (China) Information Technology Co., Ltd. using middleware developed by both companies on HP infrastructure, which supports mission-critical mobile services. Orange Gum is the first company to offer Chinese-language SMS interactive entertainment services in China.
Users may access eZhangWanBa simply by sending a SMS message containing the word "GAME" to a special service number, such as 1010 in Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin. A two-way communication between the back-end server and the end-user is set up, to create the interactive element in the SMS gaming services. Not only can end-users select from a variety of games to play, they can also directly interact and communicate using their mobile phones with other gamers.
The successful launch of eZhangWanBa exemplifies another successful alliance developed through the HP Bazaar, a global program and a unique ecosystem of participants who collaborate to create new e-services for the mobile and wireless market. Commenting on this alliance, Mr Kelvin Tan, Director, HP Mobile e-Services Bazaar, Asia Pacific, said, "Orange Gum and Newpalm were among the first companies to join the HP Bazaar program in Asia Pacific. The program has paid off in bridging wireless technologies and business. This value proposition has led to the delivery of commercialized applications to key mobile carriers in the region."
Said Mr. Tan Meng Wee, President of Orange Gum, "We are very excited to work with Newpalm and HP in China. There is great potential for entertainment services to succeed in new mobile markets such as China and we will continue working through HP' s extensive network to extend our SMS and WAP services to regional carriers like China Mobile."
Mr. John Xiao, CEO of Newpalm (China) added in agreement, "This cooperation is just the beginning of our commitment to developing and introducing more advanced applications to Chinese consumers."
"The joint launch of eZhangWanBa with HP, Orange Gum and Newpalm signifies our commitment to introducing advanced and compelling applications to Chinese consumers. China Mobile launched 'Monternet' in November last year, which is a new concept of mobile Internet that combines the advantages of personalised mobile communication and the Internet, allowing end-users to enjoy more services through SMS and WAP. 'Monternet' is a milestone in China Mobile's data business, and Newpalm is one of the first participants of 'Monternet'. We hope there are more partners like HP, Newpalm and Orange Gum to help co-develop and provide more wireless applications for China mobile users, such as this interactive SMS gaming service that we believe will be very popular with the consumers", said one of the officials from China Mobile.
