NYP Students Produce Mobile Games for Overseas Markets
2.28.2002

Singapore: - Mobile games are getting popular these days and with Java-enabled phones (J2ME) hitting the market, game play promises to be a visually exciting affair. At Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), students from the School of Information Technology and School of Design have produced handphone-based games, some of which are marketed in China and Taiwan.

Through the collaboration with Orange Gum, a local company specialising in digital entertainment, NYP has produced more than 30 games of different formats, including SMS, WAP, J2ME and Flash. Through such projects, students gain practical knowledge of emerging technologies in mobile computing.

Some examples of games produced include:

These games are produced using the latest mobile computing technologies and tools such as Zentek i-Jade Lite and Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME). Students worked in teams to develop them as part of their final-year project.

In describing the consumer markets, Mr Lam Chow Yen, Director of the School of Information Technology and School of Design said, "Knowledge of customers’ needs is of utmost importance. Most people play mobile games at the end of the day while commuting on public transport. As such, it is important to tap on the emotional appeal, that is, to let the consumer win and score easily. The games are thus designed with these factors in mind."

Meanwhile, to expand its full suite of mobile computing expertise, NYP will be offering new mobile computing and digital entertainment modules in July 2002. Offered in baskets of electives, students will learn subjects such as XML & Mobile Services, Mobile Applications Development, Games Development and Computer Graphics.

With these specialisations, NYP will be able to train students to a higher level of mobile technology, and thus customize features that suit the consumer.
