Mobile Club

Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore

To seed opportunities for wireless training and industry exposure among our youths in secondary schools and junior colleges, the Infocomm Development Authority is facilitating the set-up of Mobile Clubs in schools.

Mobile Clubs are formed as tie-ups between interested schools and an industry sponsor, or group of sponsors in the wireless industry. Each Mobile Club can be run by the school as part of its co-curricular activities. The industry sponsor works with the school in providing the necessary wireless training and industry exposure.

To illustrate, the sponsor(s) may work with the school in developing a curriculum of wireless training as part of the Mobile Club activities. This may include the development of basic logos and ringtones for mobile phones. More advanced students may be given an introduction to Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) and Java 2 Platform Micro Edition (J2ME) to program their own games and applications and perhaps, even set up their own school wireless site. Through such clubs, students will not only be equipped with the hard technical skills, but also be exposed to softer issues in the wireless industry such as an understanding of intellectual property rights in the mobile content space. A sponsor may also work with the school in industry attachment or internship opportunities.

IDA will on its part, facilitate the matchmaking of interested industry partners and schools. Interested schools and industry sponsors may email us at wireless@ida.gov.sg. Where relevant, IDA will also consider supporting competitions in the wireless space, such as the Wireless Junior Java Jam, to encourage the exchange of ideas from youth.
